計篇1-1 兵は國の大事にして 死生の地 存亡の道なり

 孫子曰く　兵は國の大事にして　死生の地　存亡の道なり　察せざる可からず

愚生の和訳　 

孫子は言った。戦争は国にとって大事なことであり、生きるか、死ぬか、存在するか、滅びるかを決するものである。我々はこのことを十分に理解しなければいけない。

Son Shi said.  War is important to a nation; it determines whether it lives or dies, exists or perishes.  We must fully understand this.

Sun Tsu said: The art of war is of vital importance to the State.

孫子　というのは、日本語読みでは「そんし」

しかし、中国語読みでは　Sun Tsu　となるのであろう。

Giles氏は、Sun Tsuとしている。

小生は、日本人であるので　「Son Shi」を採用した。

 

 

Lionel Giles CBE (29 December 1875 – 22 January 1958) was a British sinologist, writer, and philosopher. Lionel Giles served as assistant curator at the British Museum and Keeper of the Department of Oriental Manuscripts and Printed Books. He is most notable for his 1910 translations of The Art of War by Sun Tzu and The Analects of Confucius.

ライオネル・ジャイルズCBE（1875年12月29日 - 1958年1月22日）はイギリスの中国学者、作家、哲学者。ライオネル・ジャイルズは大英博物館の学芸員補佐、東洋写本・版本部門の主任を務めた。1910年に孫子の兵法と孔子の論語を翻訳したことで知られる。
